Congratulation to our latest ROSE award winner Karen Heathcote, who was nominated by a patient at Buxton UTC, who said: “I've had a difficult three months suffering with a physical issue and also mental issues which partly stem from it. Karen knew straightaway that I was struggling and talked to me in a direct but caring and professional way. She took time to understand why I was so upset and explained to me in a professional way why I didn’t need to worry so much and what to do next. I’m still not completely together but when I feel like I’m going to go to pieces I think of her and what she said and I feel a little better. I really cannot thank her enough.”
This month we have joint winners for our IRIS award – Charlotte Husband, receptionist at Walton Hospital, and Mel Dyke in her role as chair of our armed forces network. The colleague who nominated them said: "Charlotte got in touch with me after an elderly patient admired her Veteran Aware coffee mug and asked where he could get one. I connected her with Mel Dyke, who explained that the mugs are usually reserved for staff who’ve completed the armed forces champion training. However, Mel kindly offered to gift one to the gentleman. When I spoke to Charlotte, she said she’s waiting for the mug to arrive and plans to surprise him with it - he’s had his eye on it for months! I thought this was such a heartwarming example of how our staff go the extra mile for our patients."
Recent cyber attacks: You may have seen in the news that some retailers, such as Marks & Spencer and Co-Op, have recently been the victims of serious cyber attacks that have led to some customer data being compromised. In these cases, the attackers were often able to get hold of login details to systems through methods such as calling staff and helpdesks and using techniques to obtain personal information, usernames and passwords. In order to protect DCHS systems and information, please be aware that our AGEM helpdesk staff and system support teams must be fully assured of a caller’s identity when making any changes to login details or access. If you request a password reset, the helpdesk staff may ask you additional questions to verify your identity. Please be patient and considerate, this level of vigilance is needed to keep us all safe. As always, staff should:
- Report any suspicious emails following this advice.
- Never disclose your login details to anyone.
- Use strong passwords e.g. do not use family names or common words that could be guessed.
Changes to the 'shout out' process: Our 'shout outs' no longer exist under that name - the patient safety team continues to recognise and reward staff and teams though when they have had a positive impact on patient safety. The detail will be gathered from IRIS and ROSE submissions. All staff recognition should be submitted using the IRIS or ROSE forms. You can read previous editions of the staff recognition newsletter here.
Our plans to reduce cleaning in non-clinical areas: As part of our transformation work, we are proposing to make some changes to how we provide cleaning services in our non-clinical areas. For further information click here.
Join us for the launch of our new carers staff network:
All colleagues are warmly invited to a day of connection, learning and celebration at this year’s inclusion and belonging conference. The event will be proudly hosted by our staff networks – including the official launch of our newest network for carers. Jemma Walker, chair of the carers staff network, is excited to welcome colleagues into this supportive new community, created for those who balance paid work with unpaid caring responsibilities. The network aims to provide a safe, understanding space where working carers can connect, share experiences and help shape positive change across DCHS.
You can find out more about the network in this newsletter.
The conference, which has been sponsored by Unison, takes place on Wednesday 11 June from 9am at the Post Mill Centre in South Normanton – you can still book your place here. If you’d like more information on our new carers staff network just get in touch: dchst.carersnetwork@nhs.net.
Energy saving support for patient care – every little helps: Rising costs for supplies, electricity, heating and water are putting real financial strain on the NHS. Every unit of energy we waste is money we can’t invest in critical services. By taking simple, everyday steps to cut energy use, we can save thousands of pounds and help us become more financially resilient. Look out for our energy-saving tips across our channels in the coming weeks. If you have a smart idea to help us save energy, send it to dchst.communications@nhs.net – your suggestion could inspire others and be featured in future updates. Energy saving tip #1: Switch off lights in empty rooms. One light left on overnight can cost up to £25 a year. Multiply that by offices across the organisation and it adds up fast!
Datix incident/risk management system essential maintenance: The Datix incident/risk management system will be unavailable from 10.30am – 12.30pm on Wednesday 11 June due to a system upgrade. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. Please make a note of any incident or risk that requires reporting whilst the system is down and to ensure they are reported when the system is back online. Any significant incidents should be raised with the patient safety team directly while the system is unavailable: 01246 515807. If you have a query please contact Elaine Griffiths, quality assurance Datix facilitator, on 07500 578987.
Digital ReSPECT to be rolled out on Derbyshire Shared Care Record: From this month, digital ReSPECT (recommended summary plan for emergency care and treatment) for Derbyshire patients will be created and stored on the Derbyshire Shared Care Record (DSCR). This allows multiple organisations across Derbyshire to contribute to a single document, editing and updating it as required, while reducing the risk of patients having multiple active ReSPECT plans provided by different organisations. You can read more about it here. The University Hospitals of Derby and Burton (UHDB) will be the first to use this in June and the rest of us are awaiting a launch date which should be confirmed soon. In order to be ready to access the new digital ReSPECT plans, please ensure you have access to DSCR if you are in a clinical role. Support accessing DSCR is available by contacting crhft.DSCRservicedesk@nhs.net or 01246 512646.
